A Sunday Drive

What a beautiful afternoon in Reno. So I broke out the flivver, took care of some business, then toured around a bit. You want pictures? We got pictures! And a few other tidbits along the way. Forgive some of the formatting errors – they come with the territory when inserting big images into WordPress.

Holly House – My bad, Guy’s bad. Holly House was open today from 1-3 and we both meant to post to remind you readers. I arrived around 2:30 and all the bike lanes for half a block in all directions were packed with parked cars. I saw at least 60 people touring during my time there, and Donna Spear said they were lined up at the gate at 1 PM. I have never seen such a response to an open house here in Reno, maybe 200 total for the afternoon?. Sure there were a lot of looky-loos like me, but the house and its story is very compelling, and this level of interest will draw out a buyer. Guy told me that one blog reader who toured said they liked the blog, but “loved” Mike’s posts! For the house itself, I admire the developer letting the house just be what it is. I would have made some different choices and I think an extra $100,000 upgrading the improvements would have resulted in an additional $200,000 in sales price. But it’s not my money. I think the developer will do just fine on this one.

– Sky Crane – Anyone in the WSW has seen the tower crane in place on Juniper Ridge Road. I have never seen a tower crane installed for a single family residential project before (except in Switzerland where it is common practice). The property is also being surrounded by a NDOT calibre faux fence that looks like a sound wall. How big is this house going to be when it grows up?

The mock ups on site do not give a lot of confidence that this will be a masterpiece.

The house next looks like a National Park Service Lodge as much as a SFR.

Grants for restoration of historic properties were just issues, some the Dude’s WOW (West of Wells) district. See the RGJ article here.

The Reno Little Theater is a local treasure. They are finally ready to preview their new facility at 246 Arroyo Street. Open house and tour information here. Slipping a $20 into the jar would probably be much appreciated by RLT if you do go on a tour – they threw the dice to get this building up and running and are coming up a little short.

– SVA Rapid Bus Shelters – Wow, after a quick start, the new bus shelters along South Virginia started to look that they were being grown from seedlings. Finally, a roof structure is starting to go up by Plato’s Closet. My first impression is that these stations are pretty wimpy in scale and will do nothing to increase Rapid ridership, but I’ll withhold judgement for now.

– The Crisis is Over, Defaults Have Ended – I just needed to get that out of my system before doing a real post on it. Exactly 4 NODs gave been filed so far this month, and none have been by financial institutions. No one has been able to figure out NVs new foreclosure requirements that simply ask that you prove you have the right to foreclose when you file. Should that be so hard? Seems so.

So a beautiful and whimsical day for me this far into October. Tomorrow it’s time to break out the Mikita and start sealing off the crawl space vents for the Winter. Pick the last hot peppers that survived the frost, and trash the tomatoes that didn’t. Time to move on to the next act.

The crane looks like its a bit overkill but its to move the trusses and heavy support beams into place.

There was one on the North Shore(Lake Tahoe) by Lucy’s old house for a couple years. That was due to the steep downslope building style.
