Reno opens its financials to the public

The City of Reno has launched a new website that allows the public to search the city’s finances online.  The site, TransparentReno.com, is billed as “An Initiative for a more Transparent Reno”.  And Open it is.

I visited the site and was amazed with the level of detail presented.  The Online Checkbook feature is particularly interesting.  From the website,

Want to know what we’re spending your taxpayer money on? Of course you do! With the new Online Checkbook, you can check out what each department is spending and who the vendors are through a simple checkbook style web app.

But viewing city finances is only the beginning.  The site’s dashboard has portals that will take you to a variety of databases.  Take for example, the Green Energy Dashboard, which allows one to “Track energy generated from solar and wind turbine systems installed on city facilities.”  Or the GIS Mapserver, which allows one to “explore map layers such as zoning boundaries and property information.”

And that is just the tip of the iceberg. The site also contains a business licenses search, police and fire call data, active vendor list, and much more.  And more data will continue to be added.

For the data geeks out there, this site is sure to please.
