Megabus.com arrives in Reno-Sparks

The RGJ reports that a new-to-Reno bus service will begin twice-a-day express service between Reno-Sparks and Sacramento/San Francisco on Dec. 12. The bus company, Megabus.com, will offer low-cost one-way fares ranging $1 to $15.

From the Megabus.com website:

Megabus.com is the first, low-cost, express bus service to offer city-to-city travel for as low as $1 via the Internet. Since launching in April 2006, megabus.com has served more than 22 million passengers throughout more than 120 major cities across North America. Our luxury single and double deckers offer free wi-fi, at-seat plug ins, panoramic windows and a green alternative way to travel.

A $1 bus fare from Reno to San Francisco and free wi-fi – not bad.

What do you think? Would you use this service? I believe I will.

At $1 apiece, how long until the Reno and Sparks governments are offering free bus tickets to SF to our homeless? Or vice versa?
If it doesn’t become the Bum Bus, I’d consider it.

Having ridden similar operations in other cities I found the clientele on these buses was usually a step up from Greyhound, which was surprising because the fares were usually cheaper. Of course, this was quite some time ago and on the East Coast, so things might be different here.

My husband and I went on MegaBus last weekend. We didn’t get the $1 fares but ended up paying $20 per person round trip. The bus was perfectly fine, though a little behind schedule, and the advertised wifi works rather poorly.

    Catherine,
Thank you for your comment. This is good info, as I have been thinking of trying it out. If I may ask, what was the total duration of the trip to SF? How many stops?
    Thank you in advance.

For the trip to San Fran there is only one stop in Old Sacrament that lasts about 15 minutes. The total trip time in good weather is 4 hours and 40 minutes.

    Thank you, Catherine.
