How appealing is your neighborhood?

neighborhood appealA new website, Neighborhood Appeal, strives to answer that question by providing a letter grade, A+ to F, to rate areas throughout the country down to the zip code level.

The site offers two letter grades: their own grade based off of an algorithm taking into account scenic beauty, weather, crime, and air pollution; and also a “crowd sourced” grade derived from user-submitted data.

Without spending to much time checking this site out, I tested a few areas. I looked at 89509, 89519 & 89511, which are all pretty nice local area codes. All three received a B- from the site. Then I checked out 90002, which is a pretty bad area of Los Angeles, one you wouldn’t want to make a wrong turn and to get lost in. It received a B+. I’ll let you draw your own conclusions.

    I tried the same thing – 89502, 89521, 89511 all B-. 89506 C+ Not a lot of help.

Yeah, I noticed the same thing!

    Hmmm. Compton is a B+. Somersett is a B-.

I’m thinking that postal zones are too big to give meaningful data. Even in Sun valley, in the north and south hill sections, there are great sections, but across the street are rentals. What about the Yori/Gentry area and the places across the street on Plumas or Moana? The Site won’t accept the 4 digit locality zip code modifier.
