Who Reads This Blog?

Mayberry_075
The longer I write for this thing, the more I learn. Who reads this blog? This is what I’ve discovered so far… Local people who obsess about the local market, first time home buyers thinking about making an actual purchase, investors looking for unbelievable deals, move-up people thinking of trading houses, out-of-town folks thinking of moving here, down-sizers looking to retire, out-of-town Realtors checking out the market, local Realtors for whatever reason, and quite often their clients. It’s a pretty diverse audience as far as I can tell, but since everyone is anonymous, who really knows?

Well, add me to the list of out-of-towners who are in the process of relocating to Reno. All of the topics and their respective comments are great! Even the comments putting a pessimistic spin on a topic are helpful.

    Goodbye Fargo, hello Reno!

You could add, “Out of town Realtors who blog and enjoy reading other good blogs.”

How come I can’t find an RSS feed for this blog?? I’d really like to add it to my feed reader instead of randomly stumbling upon it now and then…

That’s a cute horse. She looks right at home in that setting. It’s a good thing, because she’s going to be there a while with the price tag on that listing! I’m waiting for the hefty reduction on that one.

Jay- plug in the main URL to an aware RSS reader and it should pick it up, but you can also look at the source of the home page- the RSS feed URLs are listed.

Jeff if the Fargo you refer to is the Fargo in North Dakota, I would like to hear your impressions of prices and values (they are not the same thing) between Fargo and Reno.

Come on Usual Suspects, this is a call to disclose a bit!

I’m a reader because, first, it can be a hoot (Lindsie’s double wide?); second, the contributor pool has vastly widened my knowledge of the Reno market and access to resources about it; third, I think I have something to contribute to the discussion from my personal observations and data digging.

I am not looking to buy or sell my home in the imemdiate future. The 89523 rancherro suits me fine. Bring your horses.

Figured I’d weigh in on the topic. We are out of towners considering relocating from Ann Arbor, MI area. I check out this blog, and downtown makeover frequently to see what is going on out there. Love all the insights on your economy and real estate markets. Thanks for all the great info!

Why do I read this blog? It’s refreshingly honest. I’m in no immediate rush to buy/sell, but I get bored easily (with almost everything) and when the market is a little better I will probably sell and buy another home in the area for no better reason than it will be ‘different’ (my husband loathes to hear that and hates moving)

I lived in Reno from 1999-2005. we owned out in Cold Springs and always wanted to move into town. I moved to DC in 2006 and came back in 2007. We bought down in Curti Ranch and ended up getting about $70K off the asking price of a new home in a now closed out neighborhood.

Not sure how that clasifies me for the categories you mentioned, Diane, but I love reading your blog and the info on here is always interesting. I am not moving anytime soon so I don’t really care where the market goes short term but I still enjoy the posts on what is happening.

I check in as a fellow blogger to see what is going on in my old neck of the woods (did my school years in the Truckee Meadows area).

Diane has a great blog with lots of info.

    Lindie,

I’m in Fargo, ND at the moment. I’ll be relocating to Reno in a month. Prices are less in Fargo for a few big reasons, 1- the land is much cheaper. I’m on the edge of the new suburbs and my 1/2 acre lot is 40k.

The new homes in Fargo don’t have as many amenities or luxuries as the new homes being built in Reno either.

Also, there hasn’t been any speculative buying and there isn’t the kind of money floating around here as there is in Reno (internet wealth, stock options, real estate appreciation, etc.) I know Reno isn’t the epicenter for this kind of wealth, but it’s still pretty easy to see how much less money Fargo residents hold. Just pick a price like 500k or 1mil and see how few homes in these ranges are for sale in Fargo.

Taking the lot out of the equation and looking at value, I’d guess that you get just a little more for your money in Fargo. (I’m thinking new homes in the 400k range in Reno are in the 300k range in Fargo.)

These are all just opinions, as I’m just a prospective homebuyer out surfing the web.

    Lindie,

I’m in Fargo, ND right now. Your money certainly goes further on a house in Fargo than in Reno. Land is cheaper – my 1/2 acre lot in the ‘burbs was about 40k. Homes aren’t generally built here with as many amenities/luxuries either. Oh, and no speculators buying/selling here. (OK, there may be a few, but I don’t think there’s enough of that activity going on to impact pricing.)

I’m not in the real estate biz, so these are just observations without hard data.

Count my wife and I as out-of-towners who will be moving to Reno in mid 2008. The kids will be out of college and we are “retiring” young (56). Diane, Guy and all of the great posters, thank you for all of the information that you post. It’s nice to go to a blog where the posters tell it like it is and are respectful of each others opinions and ideas. We’re coming from Fairfield, California.

Hi. MikeZ. Software Engineer. Came here in 2003 from New England, just as RE prices were shooting through the roof.

I forget how I found this site but I was attracted to the candor from Diane and Guy about the local RE market.

Figured I would throw my .2 cents in as well. My wife and I moved to reno part time in 2002, and now live her full time. WE absolutely love it here for too many reasons to list. We live in spanish springs and couldnt think of any other place we would rather be!!

After having lived in upstate NY (ithaca) for 17 years, along with northern california (santa rosa/sonoma county). And Naples florida briefly. We have realized Reno is the place for us and have no intentions of ever moving or Selling our beautifull house either.. Perhaps thats why all the doom and gloom on here annoys me. b We didnt move here to make money on RE. We moved here Because Iwe fell in love with Reno.

Besides When someone ask’s me what I paid for my house in 10 years they wont believe it heh heh … I do agree that It would be nice to have a downtown market though. something similar to sonoma county.. That WOULD DEFFINITELY get me downtown alot more often.. Cheers!

Love the site. We are from Reno and are also going to be retiring early, but Reno has turned too expensive for us. Count me in with those who love the downtown condos, but think the cost is out of synch with local wages. I can’t talk my wife into Mexico, so we’re looking at northern New York…incredibly inexpensive, well-built older homes by the lake or St. Lawrence River.

  17. Derrrick

To the previous poster. If you have any questions about upstate Ny I wouldnt mind answering them for you ( lived there for 17 years).

Maybe you 2 should take a visit up there if you already havent. perhaps even book a stay @ http://www.jjande.com My sister and her husbands Bed and breakfast . nestled among 13 acres in the heart of the finger lakes wine region. All the rooms feature 2 person jaccuzzi tubs, flat panel HD Tv’s,gas fireplaces, wireless internet, and countless amentities. Oh and dont forget the world class cuisine featurin modern american comfort food.

LoL oops Im selling it again.. anyways let me know if I can help you in anyways.

Diane, thanks for calling me out. I am a lurking REALTOR. You’re still doing a great job here. Sorry I did not respond sooner, but I’ve been off enjoying the summer and just came across your post!
