Carson City, Nevada made SmartMoney’s "The New Best Places to Retire" list. In this new list of cities SmartMoney has identified "the more affordable twins to some of America’s previous [retirement] chart-toppers." These cities offer "a similar culture, climate and suite of amenities, as well as comparable medical, educational and travel offerings." Carson City is described as an attractive and economical alternative to Boulder, Colorado.
SmartMoney’s New Best Places to Retire:
- Prescott, Arizona
- St. Augustine, Florida
- Chattanooga, Tennessee
- Bloomington, Indiana
- Carson City, Nevada
- Auburn, Alabama
- Bellingham, Washington
- San Luis Obispo, California

These list things get pretty silly. And boring. Every three days a new list appears in some magazine.
Yawn.

Agreed. One day it’s the ‘best’ place and next day it’s the ‘worse’ place.

I have to wonder how much of the “Best/Worst cities for X” meme is actually driven by a desire to generate more web traffic and click-throughs.

There is only one reason for these lists: the magazine wants to get on the news and sell copies. The website wants publicity for more hits. I’m afraid there isn’t much thought put into the research involved.

Carson ain’t Boulder. Just like the thread of about a year ago where the tree huggers came in and bashed Reno for not being Boulder.
I went to school in Boulder. It’s a nice place. Expensive, but nice.
I think northern Nevada would be an ideal place to retire right now. Very cheap real estate, very low taxes, etc…..
I think northern Nevada could make alot of money by catering to and marketing to soon to be retirees. I can think of few places that would be better to retire than northern Nevada.
Trouble is, is anybody retiring these days? Can anyone afford to retire?? Just thought I’d ask….

This article is a perfect illustration of why one should never automatically accept what the media dishes out.
Exactly two years ago, the Reno Post Office had to consolidate Carson City’s letters and magazines/flats processing because of dramatically decreasing volume. Overall mail volume for the relatively new housing areas on Carson’s north side (zip code 89706) is in a seemingly permanent nosedive. Carson has been and continues to lose population like Reno/Sparks does.
Utility costs are rather high and going higher, why would a retiree want to live in Carson where one must endure a freezing low morning temp usually from late Oct. thru mid-April?
Carson has had a Target and Borders for less than 10 years. In the mid-90s people would drive to Reno for part-time jobs because of the slave-like wages paid in Carson. Carson’s overall feel of being stuck in 1985 and huge, outsized elderly population who will not be able to count on Medicare in the very near future are other factors to consider.
Carson’s largest casino, the Nugget, has a shockingly terrible downscale buffet and is almost empty much of the time. For a decade the former Ormsby house has been closed with renovations still far from completed and likely never will be finished. The Station House Casino had to close it’s moderately priced restaurant because of the tightwad, skinflint custoimer base in Carson. A former Carson auto repair shop owner has complained for many years about how so many Carson shops are rip-off joints. And now the prison is closing.
If one must put up with the five month winters here, I would rather live in Yerington.
