Reno again making the lists

Today’s Reno Gazette-Journal reported on Reno-Sparks’ ranking in the most recent Milken Institute Best Performing Cities Index.  This index ranks US cities’ ability to create and sustain jobs.

Out of 200 of the nation’s largest cities, the Reno-Sparks metro area ranked 196th in job creation and sustainability (incidentally, Las Vegas ranked 164th).  See the RGJ’s, Reno area near bottom of national jobs rankings for the story.

On a positive note, this week’s Northern Nevada Business Weekly reports that Nevada ranks 13th among states to which other Americans would like to move; this from a new Harris Poll [see the NNBW’s, Nevada dreamin’]

    Just can’t seem to get into the current fray so with your permission, some lighter fare supporting why Carson City may be a good place to retire to.

    For those that don’t follow local news [and care], on Monday Vail Associates, the umbrella ownership arm of Vail, Beaver Creek, Keystone, Breckenridge, Arapahoe Basin [all in CO.] and Heavenly Valley [South Shore] ski resorts, announced it had purchased [from Booth Creek Resorts] ownership of Northstar at Tahoe’s operations. Effective Tuesday, Vail Associates announced that for the upcoming ski season, most season passes at both Heavenly Valley/Northstar at Tahoe will be interchangeable between the two resorts. In other words, for the price of one ski pass, you really pick up access to two major ski resorts. Now I’ll grant you that Carson City’s no hop, skip and jump away from South Shore, but given Reno’s proximity to the Lake’s North Shore, it’s actually closer than Reno.

    If you’re a Nevada snowrider, your options just became upgraded for no additional cost. And if you’re a retired snowrider on a fixed income [like Harry Reid tells us he is (at least the fixed income part)], your recreational options just doubled. Try that at any of the other “top 10” offerings the subject of this story.

    Also FWIW,

    1. There’s a nice relatively new Costco in Carson City;
    2. There’s a nice relatively new Home Depot in Carson City;
    3. The price of gasoline is markedly cheaper than in Reno;
    4. The sales tax rate is lower than in Reno;
    5. It’s the capitol of Nevada; and,
    6. Once they finish building the state highway that connects Reno/Carson City, it’ll only be a hop, skip and jump away from Reno.

    If you’re a retiree, you could do a lot worse!

    The newest edition of the State Business Tax Climate Index, which ranks from 1 (best) to 50 (worst) the tax systems of the 50 states, places Nevada at no. 4. …behind only South Dakota (1), Alaska (2) and Wyoming (3).

    “Nevada at no. 4.” … and CA #49.

    If I were a business owner I’d never open my doors in CA unless I needed some specific geographic resource within the state, like Sonoma/Napa Valley for a winery.

    We all know how businesses are flocking to the top 3 tax states. Would expect nothing less for #4.
