Welcome Benco Dental!

I read in this morning’s Reno Gazette-Journal that Benco Dental plans to open a 100,000-square-foot distribution facility at the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center.  This distribution center (Benco’s fifth in the United States) will serve the company’s west coast customers.

To Benco personnel: I would like to say Welcome and thank you for choosing Northern Nevada for your newest distribution center’s location.

I also see that you are hiring locally, which is awesome!  But if any of your current employees will be relocating to the Reno-Sparks area, I’d love to assist with their real estate needs.  Give me a call.

Sincerely,
Guy Johnson

This highlights something Reno really can sell – it’s potential as a western distribution hub. Lots of things going for Reno in that regard.

Steve, it’s already known as a distribution hub and rumor has it that Elko is building a competing center with lower rents. However, I agree anything added is better than subtracting.

15 jobs and 12 of them require no training or skill. The perfect employer for Nevada’s workforce. Can you drive a forklift? Can you lug boxes?

I hear you Sully but what I am suggesting is this is one area Reno should strive to do whatever it takes to not let Elko or anyone else steal away the jobs.

I am still stuck here in Alaska but one part of my get to Reno plan is the possibility of opening a small distribution center there. My company currently ships hundreds of thousands of dollars of products to Alaska every year only to sell them on our website and ship the back down south. We eat all the shipping to Alaska. We have to subsidize the shipping to the Lower 48 from Alaska to be competitive. My cost to rent space here is higher than it would be in Reno, and I have a 4% business inventory tax.

Instead, open a warehouse in Reno, store product there that sells on our website. The orders get taken in Alaska but shipped from Reno. Multiple ways it benefits the company and my customers. So I am actively looking into making that happen. Might have to be talking to Guy at some point about finding me a little warehouse.

I am small potatoes but the fact is this is an area where Reno shines and where the workforce can do the job. Maybe not high pay but these days any job is a good job.

Can you drive a fork lift and show up to work sober? Every day? And not drive the fork lift into the wall? You can? Great, we’ll start you at $9.50 an hour.

    Steve,
Thank you for your comment and the link. Cool graphic of the 1- and 2- day truck service.

Add to the driving a fork lift qualificaiton . . . Can you speak English? Can you follow instructions? Did you finish high school? No! Do you have a criminal record? Yes! That’s okay. Are you breathing? Yes! Well, you’re the most qualified candidate we’ve found in the State. You’re hired until we spend all the government incentives and fold our doors in a year.
