Real estate agents continue to hang it up

It has been a year since I last posted the number of local license real estate agents. Not surprisingly, the numbers continue to fall – however at a slower pace.

In Washoe County another 66 agents have hung up their licenses in the past year. Washoe County currently has 2,578 Active real estate licensees. This total represents a 2.5 percent decrease from a year ago – as well as another new low (since I began tracking the data).

The number of Washoe County agents placing their licenses in Inactive status also fell, to 744 – a 7.3 percent decrease.

Statewide numbers show similar movements. The currently 20,744 Active licensed agents represent a 6.3 percent decrease from a year ago. The 5,276 Inactive agents statewide represent a 6.7 percent decrease

Now that “easy” equity sales are gone ex realtors must be too lazy to learn the inner workings of short sales and REO bank owned/forclosures. IMHO these stats show that existing realtors are more knowledgable than ever!

Don’t let the door hit them in the backside.

This should be good news all around. It’s good for the remaining real estate agents, since they’ll have to split business among fewer agents. It’s good news for clients, since the remaining agents are (hopefully) mostly the better ones. The only organization this is bad news for is the National Association of Realtors (since they’ll be collecting fewer dues) but I don’t think you’ll find much sympathy for that organization here.

Agree with AnonymousCoward, this is good news for buyers and the expreienced professionals who’ve made this their vocation, bad news for the I’m-a-realtor-on-the-weekend hacks.
