Neighbors From Mars

Dscn0872_1Believe it or not, some of your neighbors may think like this. (Sellers, just a friendly reminder, the market is the market. Good values sell, bad values languish.) What?

More on Somersett and bad values languishing. Look at MLS 60019108. Another house in Somersett. The last (and only) sale of this house was on March 16, 2006, for $505,106. Now, 6 months later, it is listed for $579,000. Huh?
Is somebody hoping the greater fool theory is still operative? This market has gone DOWN in the past 6 months, not up. As a realtor, can you explain what might be the thinking here?
The fire might not bring down prices in Somersett (or maybe it might), but listings like this are going up in flames on their own. Or are there still some greater fools who have been living in a cave?

Today that same house is $549,900. Maybe the owners bought it new thinking they could flip it? Or maybe there’s a divorce? Or a job transfer? Who knows… but that price sure came down quickly. It smells like a serious financial problem.

The house itself is on a tiny lot with no views. I’m not sure it’s even worth the money they paid.
